Street Teams operate in various communities, building relationships with residents who face challenges such as loneliness and social isolation. Residents come together every Saturday to participate in Street Team events, enjoying food, music, sport and entertainment, and accessing social and practical support as needed. Residents are also welcome to attend Planetshakers Church events and activities.
Strike Teams go into homes to do odd jobs such as cleaning, minor repairs, maintenance and general handyman work. Strike Teams are an extension of the work of our Street Teams.
Empower partners with Foodbank Victoria to provide fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy, non-perishable food and everyday household items to those in need. Our pantry offers recipients the dignity of choosing their own items, free of charge.
The goal of The Pantry is to address food insecurity in the community and to provide a welcoming point of contact for building relationships. The longer term goal is to help empower the recipients to build a more sustainable future.
Empower offers personalised support for individuals who are on a journey of healing and restoration. Support is available to refugees and asylum seekers, men and women affected by homelessness, addictions or mental health issues and also those who are newly released from prison or leaving the sex industry. Empower works closely with other community organisations and services.
EMPOWER LIFE GROUPS:
Empower Life Groups meet at the Planetshakers city campus and offer specialised support for people struggling with mental health and addiction issues. The group is both a safe place and a stepping stone, preparing participants for further social engagement, training or work opportunities.
Each person is matched with a mentor who supports them as they develop life skills. The goal is to empower the person by building on their strengths and assets. The mentor helps facilitate access to training, volunteer and paid work placements, through various networks including Planetshakers Church. The focus is on building strong relationships and social networks.
Empower volunteers serve in prisons and juvenile justice centres across Melbourne in partnership with organisations such as Prison Network Ministries and Zone Out. Volunteers assist with life skills and personal development programs, dance workshops, Sunday services and special events at Christmas and Easter.
CHRISTMAS GIFT GIVING
Every Christmas, the people of Planetshakers Church provide gifts for vulnerable children in Melbourne. Gifts are distributed through The Salvation Army, Prison Fellowship, 4C’s in Pakenham and the Northern Bay Early Learning and Care Centre.
A PLACE FOR YOU:
REFUGEE & ASYLUM SEEKER SUPPORT
Empower recognises that refugees and asylum seekers are among the most vulnerable people in our community. A support worker visits newly arrived families, welcoming them and ensuring that their practical needs are being met.
Empower offers ongoing practical, social and emotional support as refugees and asylum seekers begin to settle and rebuild their lives. Families are linked with Urban Life Groups, who offer ongoing friendship and a network of connections, linking refugees and asylum seekers to the wider community.
Our core strategy is Love Does. Empower encourages and motivates our whole church to put love into action, seeking ways to support our local communities.
Individuals and families in Planetshakers Church are encouraged to be sensitive and responsive to the needs of people in our neighbourhoods. Initiatives might include befriending a newly arrived refugee family, offering social support for a frail elderly neighbour, mowing the lawns for a solo parent, or helping at a backyard blitz for a local community group.
